    Do ants produce acid when angered?

    The purpose of this experiment is to determine when insects like ants spray formic acid when angered. Get a few pieces of cabbage, then boil it for at least 15 minutes. Drain the leaves over a glass afterwards. Cut a paper towel into few strips, then dip the strips into the drained cabbage water. Spread out each strip and allow to dry. Afterwards, place the strips over the ants. Note the changes of color, when the strips turn pink, the ants secreted acid, when it’s green, it’s a base.

    How much percentage of an orange is water?

    This experiment aims to determine how much water is present in an orange. First step is to weigh the orange. Also weigh the aluminum foil used to place an orange on. Cut the orange into very thin slices. Place the orange on the aluminum foil. Allow the orange to dry in a warm place, you may use a desk lamp to speed up the drying process. The completion of the drying process can take about 4 to 36 hours. Once fully dried, weigh again the oranges. Subtract the weight of the dried orange from the fresh one, then do your conclusion.

    How do fogs form?

    Explain the 2 kinds of fogs, the advection and radiation. Advection fog forms from warm moist air blown inward. The radiation fog is the warm, moist air that forms too close to the ground. Create your own fog using two bottles with narrow necks. Fill 1 bottle with hot water and the other one with cold water then place an after several minutes place an ice cube on the mouth of each bottles. See what happens after.

    How do fossils form?

    Demonstrate how fossils form. You can make use of cardboard, plaster of Paris, leaver, water, and petroleum jelly. This method is to demonstrate how fossils form in mud. Mix the water and plaster of paris, spread the mixture on a cardboard. Cover the leaf with petroleum jelly and place it on the plaster. Allow it to dry then remove the leaf when the plaster dries, you now have a model for a fossil.

    Clayton Christensen wrote a book in 1997 that created an earthquake in the global business world. His book, The Innovator’s Dilemma describes “disruptive technology” in the marketplace that creates a firestorm of innovation so quickly, that renders known, present technologies is obsolete. It’s the process of a product or service that takes root in simple applications at the bottom of the market and through relentless movement upward, suddenly displaces established competitors.

    Examples of disruptive technology is described in these terms to these products: vinyl records were suddenly replaced by 8 track tapes that were replaced by cassettes that were replaced by cd’s that were replaced by iPods. What happened to the Walkman? Look at MP3 players and the iPod. What happened to 35mm film? Look at digital cameras. Kodak thought digital photography was a passing fad but when digital hit the marketplace and stayed and grew, it displaced 35mm film developing with instant photos through digital technology.

    How does disruptive technology affect human resources staffing?

    Disruptive technologies change the nature of an industry thereby changing a firm’s viability that does not adopt disruptive technologies. Although the technologies may not show immediate results, the sudden change will change human resource staffing in order to accommodate the technology success. The success could reflect lower cost, simpler operation, smaller size and greater convenience. That means technology success will eventually affect HR staffing in terms of decreasing or increasing the size of employee staffing. Either way, HR departments have to be ready for the change and work accordingly to stay up with the technology growth, company growth and relevance in the industry and ultimately, in the marketplace.

    Both the intended and unintended effects of specific human resource practices must be considered and firms must be prepared to accept the development of unsuccessful new technologies as well as successful technologies that may develop into disruptive technologies.     One of the last things that a student does when working on a science fair entry is to create their display board. While many students rely on a simple 2 dimensional piece of poster board for their display board, others go the extra mile by using a triboard for their display piece. A triboard is a great option as it is designed to stand up on its own and it offers three large panels that students can use to display information about their science experiment.

    What Is a Triboard?

    A triboard is basically a foam board that has been precut and reinforced so that it has two joints. The two joints segment the board into three panels. The two outer panels can be positioned so that the entire triboard stands up on a table or desk without external support. Triboards are sold in art supply, craft and office supply stores. They generally come in white and black, and occasionally they can be found in designer colors like blue or neon colors.

    Panel #1 The Introduction to Your Project

    The first panel of your triboard needs to be dedicated to introducing your science experiment. It will identify the hypothesis that you selected, the reason why this topic is important and it will explain how your experiment was set up. The graphic elements that this panel will contain will focus on the materials used in your experiment and the experiment set-up.

    Panel #2 The Experiment

    The second panel will focus on the experiment and the collection of data. This panel will have the most graphic elements. The graphics that it will need include charts, graphs and photographs. Each graphic element will need to be labeled. In addition to the graphic elements, text elements will also need to be posted on the middle panel. First of al the title of the experiment will be found on the second panel. You will also want to add text panels that describe the data that was collected.

    Panel #3 Conclusions

    The final panel will summarize your findings and talk about the conclusions that you have drawn. This panel will have the least amount of graphics. It will instead have bullet points that explain your results and that also explain how the data either supports or negates your hypothesis. The final panel can also include a list of questions that still need to be answered or research you think still needs to be done on your topic.

    Most science fiction stories are bout tall, square-jawed adventurers exploring the galaxy and singlehandedly vanquishing the alien foe. What about the people who perform the unexciting “blue collar” jobs that make the voyages possible?

    A being, of indeterminate gender, maintains a ship’s waste treatment system. A female asteroid miner has a unique companion. It is an alien-constructed being, made from human sperm. It looks exactly like a human, but, on the inside, there is no mind or personality. Imagine an episode of the TV show “The Deadliest Catch” moved to the asteroid belt.

    On Titan, a human miner is caught in the conveyor belt that carries the pieces of rock out of the mine, and deposits them in a giant pile, in open vacuum. A trio of women spens their days walking on top of a domed city, patching up holes and cracks in the dome. Another story takes place on an Earth that has run out of energy. The only working motor vehicles are those that people build themselves. There is also a news story about the hazards involved in being part of the crew building a space station in orbit.

    This is a strong, well done group of stories about a not-well-known part of society. There is a good variety of stories, from lesser-known authors, that are well worth reading.
